Description
What is it
-
Brand/Line: Pravana ChromaSilk — HI LIFTS collection.
-
Type: Permanent creme hair color.
-
Goal: To lift natural hair color by up to 4 levels and deposit tone/neutralize brassiness — all without using bleach.
How it works & Features
-
Lift + Tone in One Step
-
It lightens the natural pigment to some degree (lifting) while depositing pigment (toning) to help neutralize undesirable warm tones (like yellow/orange).
-
Specifically designed for natural hair levels 6 through 9. If your virgin hair is level 6+, this product can lift and tone. Using it on darker than level 6 tends to result in warmer tones because underlying pigments get exposed.

-
Tones / Neutralizes Warmth
-
The shades (violet-based tones) are formulated to counteract brassiness. Depending on the particular shade they have varying degrees of violet pigment to neutralize yellow/orange. Champagne is more neutral/sand to work with natural undertones or to soften the violets.
-
-
Ingredients & Hair Care
-
Enriched with things like apricot oil, keratin, hydrolyzed silk to help maintain hair integrity, smoothness, and feel.
-
The formula has a higher alkalinity than many standard permanent colors. This helps with lifting (making cuticle open more) but also means more care is needed to avoid damage.
-
-
Developer & Processing
-
Mix ratio is about 1:1.5 with a creme developer (often 30–40 volume depending on how much lift you want).
-
Processing time is up to 45 minutes, and no extra heat is required.
-
Limitations / What to Be Careful With
-
Natural Level Matters: If your hair is darker than level 6 (i.e. more natural pigment, deeper browns), the lift may not be enough, or the warm undertones (reds/oranges) may show through because some shades in HI LIFTS don’t have enough blue/violet to counter severe warmth.
-
Damage Risk: Because of the higher alkalinity and because lifting naturally stresses the hair (opening the cuticle), it’s more likely to cause dryness, porosity, or damage if hair is already compromised or if aftercare is ignored.
-
Shade Limitations: If you want very pale blondes or very neutral ashy blondes (especially if starting from darker hair), this may still fall short of what bleach + toner can achieve.
-
Evenness: Lifting + toning in one product can sometimes be less predictable than doing separate bleach + toner: sometimes the tone might be uneven, or underlying warmth unevenly exposed. Doing a strand test is wise.
-
Maintenance: Tonal colors with violet pigments may fade more quickly, especially with frequent washing, UV exposure, or harsh shampoos. Using color-safe products helps.
- Each has a different balance of toning pigment (violet/blue) which affects how strong the neutralizing will be vs how “cool” or “purple” the end result looks.
